Gopeng, Perak: What to see and do

A humble town 20 kilometres south of Perak’s capital city of Ipoh, Gopeng is a site ripe with heritage and rich in cuisine and lush landscape. The burg is known for its high population of Rao people, a clan closely related to the likes of Minang and Mandaling tribes, who keep their traditions alive in the form of their unique dialect or chakok Rao and kelamai culinary art with famous dish gulei nangko. During the height of Malaysia’s tin industry, Gopeng contributed its fair share with local, British, and even French tin mining companies centred there until the 1980s, and nowadays relies on its gathering of limestone from numerous caves surrounding the area. The town’s epicentre houses Gopeng Bus Station, mini marts, shop lots, and other modest amenities quintessential to Malaysian suburbia, and is a short distance away from the greenery and mountain ranges Gopeng is known for. Gua Tempurung where travellers can venture into for caving; a number of rain forests to jungle trek in; and the Kampar river where water sports such as spana-58-6">rafting, waterfall abseiling, and kayaking are aplenty help fulfil the demand for eco-tourism within the locale
