Kuching, Sarawak: What to see and do

The Bruneian empire’s third capital before being ceded to the British Brooke family in 1841, the town of Kuching was the headquarters for the ‘White Rajahs’ before joining the Japanese empire during the Occupation, the Crown colonies in 1946, and finally, the independent nation of Malaysia in 1963. The state’s largest and most populous city, Kuching is the gateway to Sarawak’s tourism destination and takes pride in its status as ‘one of the most multi-racial cities in Malaysia’.

A city build in tandem with its nature-centric values, the ‘Cat City’s’ modern skyscrapers sit side-by-side with its surrounding greenery. As you walk past the masses of tree canopies that complement your views of Kuching, seek the sights of Tabuan Heights’ Friendship Garden marking the diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China, or the river-fronting Astana, which lays out a swath of manicured lawn before the lapping waters. Complete your tour of the city’s natural sights with a sunset stop at the Waterfront, which frames the silhouette of minarets, boats, and bridges with the watercolour-orange of the horizon.

Then, join the multitudes of foodies as you turn towards the various restaurant and cafeterias for a fix of local favourites. Slurp down your bowl of kolok mee or laksa Sarawak, as you wait for your grilled ikan sebelah or a serving of satay with mee Jawa. If an aching for a seafood splurge is guiding you towards the riverside city, turn towards the collection of food stalls that occupy Jalan Bukit Mata’s Top Spot Food Court or Ban Hock Road’s See Good Food Centre. Take your pick from their spread of the catch of the day as you sip on your Sarawak coffee, three-layer tea, or the dessert-like “White Lady”.
